In modern organizations, the most important work often happens across team boundaries — where no one has formal authority over anyone else. Scrum Masters, product owners, consultants, and lateral leaders all face the same challenge: how do you move things forward when you can’t simply tell people what to do?
Influence without authority starts with trust. People follow those they trust, not those with the loudest voice or the highest title. Building trust means showing genuine interest in others’ goals, following through on commitments, and being transparent about your own intentions.
Resistance isn’t the enemy — it’s information. When someone pushes back, they’re telling you something about their concerns, constraints, or priorities. Instead of pushing harder, get curious. Ask what’s behind the “no.” Often, you’ll find a path forward that works for everyone — and that path is usually better than your original plan.
